NISOD 2021 - Designing to Pivot: Preparing your Face-to-Face Class to go Online

This presentation will focus on the approach I take to designing classes for my department that have allowed us to transition quickly to online delivery, particularly in the ever-changing circumstances of the pandemic. Some methods focus on the design of the course itself while others focus on how we manage the content of all of our courses within our LMS. The presentation will focus on our specific example with discussion on diverse ways to accomplish these goals.

"During this roundtable discussion, participatns explore how an Introduction to Psychology class provides an ideal platform for exploring, teaching, and assessing general education learning outcomes.  Using the signature assignment model, participatns discuss how this course can help studnets madter general education skills early in their college careers.  THe work developed by particpatns during the session will be ublished in a follow-up e-book."

• Presentation on the Alignment of KVCC's Essential Learning Outcomes and the development of specific "Special Assignments" to teach and assess this learning.

Delivered two presentations to faculty at the college:

• Basics of Blackboard (including a presentation on a survey I conducted on students’ perspectives on Blackboard)
• iPad Applications in the Classroom - Co-presented with Stephen LaRochelle (Library Director) focusing on the use of iPads in the classroom.  Examples from my Spring 2014 MHT 220: Case Management class were discussed and presented.

2013

Atlantic Coast Teaching of Psychology Conference (ACToP)

Delivered two presentations at this year's ACToP conference on September 20-21, 2013

• Assessing AAC&U General Education Learning Outcomes in Introduction to Psychology
• Integrating Instructional Design Theory into Clear and Structured Online Lesson Plans

Keynote Presentatoin at the Phi Theta Kappa Induction Ceremony

Phi Theta Kappa is the nationally affiliated Honor Society at KVCC.  I was nominated and elected to present the key note for the induction ceremony.

The title of my presentation was "Now that you have succeeded, it is time to fail!".  The presentation focused on the need to fail in order to more fully understand where growth can occur.  I discussed the Zone of Proximal Development and its application to establishing goals for personal, professional, and academic growth.
